The Forgotten Smile

Chapter 1: Fatal Curiosity

Blackwood Manor stood on an isolated hill just outside the city, looking like an aging monster swallowed by dense fog. For years, tales and legends had been woven around this place; entire families vanishing without a trace, and agonizing screams tearing through the dead of night. But for Laila, these stories were nothing more than fuel for her curiosity. As a passionate urban explorer and photographer, she saw the manor as a decaying masterpiece waiting to be immortalized.

She pushed the heavy wooden front door, which let out a sharp, agonizing creak as if it were in pain. The moment she stepped inside, she was hit by the overwhelming stench of mildew and decades-old dust. The silence inside wasn't a normal, peaceful silence; it was heavy, oppressive, and expectant... as if the house itself were watching her every move.

Chapter 2: The Shadow at the End of the Hall

Laila flicked on her heavy-duty flashlight and began wandering through the main hall. She snapped photos of the slashed portraits and the rotting, grand wooden staircase. The camera's flash illuminated the decay for fractions of a second before the suffocating darkness swallowed everything whole once again. As she focused her lens down a long, pitch-black corridor on the second floor, she froze. She heard a sound.

It wasn't the sound of the wind whistling through broken windows, nor the settling of old timber. It was a rhythmic, dry sound... like the popping of joints and bones moving after centuries of stagnation. The blood turned to ice in Laila’s veins as she turned, agonizingly slow, toward the source of the noise at the far end of the dark hallway.

Chapter 3: The Smile

She directed her trembling flashlight beam toward the corner. There, amidst the thick, suffocating shadows, stood a woman. She was wearing a torn, filth-stained Victorian gown. Her body was terrifyingly gaunt, as if her pale skin was stretched directly over a skeletal frame. Laila swallowed hard and tried to step back, but her feet were rooted to the floorboards.

The woman’s head rose slowly with a sickening, jerky motion. The beam of light revealed a face as pale as chalk and eyes that were entirely milky white, devoid of any pupils. But the worst part... the thing that made Laila’s mind completely reject reality, was her smile. It was impossibly wide, stretching literally from ear to ear, tearing the skin at the corners of her mouth to reveal rows of jagged, blackened teeth. It wasn't a smile of joy; it was a display of ancient, unquenchable hunger.

Suddenly, Laila’s flashlight began to flicker frantically, and then... it died completely. The corridor plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness, swallowing every shred of hope. Just as Laila opened her mouth to scream, she felt a breath as cold as frost brush against the back of her neck. A terrifying, raspy voice whispered directly into her ear: "Why aren't you smiling?"
